A walk around the significant Hanseatic city of Wismar.

Wismar is a former Hanseatic city, now an important port and a district town in northern Germany. Thanks to the rich Hanseatic history and architecture it was, together with Stralsund, listed among the UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Wismar was an important Hanseatic town as early as in the Middle Ages. Thanks to this, visitors can be impressed by the atmosphere of a medieval town with buildings made of red brick, from bourgeoisie houses to the countless churches and chapels. A typical representative of the local architecture is a house called "Alter Schwede" from the 13th century. Its name refers to the time when the city was in the hands of the Swedes.

If you like to connect holidays and trips with shopping, then shopping in Wismar could be an interesting experience. There is a four-storey shopping secession house at the corner of Krämerstraße and Lübsche Straße. It was in this very building where in 1881 Rudolph Karstadt opened his first shop with just a single employee. Nowadays, the chain of Karstadt department stores is in almost every larger German city.
